Comment: ~Otake Affinity's with Nature~. 'The Yoshino forest embodies the ideal relationship between nature and human being.' The idea of working with and making the most of nature is not only part of his approach to his work, but also part of his life in Yoshino. In summer he goes river climbing and fishing, and he also enjoys daily activities such as baking bread and making cheese with an interest in natural fermentation. As a woodworker, Ohtake produces vessels and lighting fixtures of his own design, as well as chairs made by his apprentice, master craftsman Toshio Tokunaga from Hyogo Prefecture. Ohtake moved to Shimoichi to be closer to the Yoshino forest where he produces the wood for his work. The Yoshino Forest in Nara is a legacy of Japan's afforestation programme. Cedar and cypress trees grow thickly and are repeatedly thinned over the years. Each tree is cared for for at least 200 years by several generations of forestry workers before being felled to produce the beautiful wood with fine grain, uniform colour and few knots that characterise Yoshino timber.; ~Otake Affinity’s with Nature~ 「自然と人間の理想的な関係を体現している吉野の森」自然とともに働き、自然を生かすという考え方は、彼の仕事に対するアプローチだけではなく吉野での生活の一部でもある。夏は沢登りや釣りに出かけ、また自然発酵にも興味を持ちパンを焼いたり、チーズを作ったりといった日々の活動を楽しんでいる。木工職人である大竹は、自らデザインした器や照明器具を製作する傍ら、弟子入りしていた兵庫県の名匠徳永順夫の椅子を製作している。大竹は、作品に使う木材を生産する吉野の森に近い場所を求めて下市に移住した。奈良の吉野の森は、日本の植林事業の遺産である。スギやヒノキが茂り、何年もかけて間伐が繰り返される。一本一本の木は、数世代にわたる林業家によって少なくとも200年は手入れされた後、伐採され、吉野材の特徴である、木目が細かく、色調が均一で、節が少ない美しい木材となる。
